9.1 The monasteries is meteora
Greece is built on texhtonic plates which makes it mountainous and prone to earthquakes. It was warm outside but the mountains were snow capped. 
The monasteries are built atop some structures which were formed and shaped by the melting glaciers. The pictures speak for themselves...
The monks climbed atop these mountains with handmade and would somehow climb to the apex. (No wonder they prayed so much!) They used pulleys, levers, and baskets to transport goods and people
